Scaffolding know-how
Scaffold types explained.
More than 70 years of scaffolding tradition, turned into knowledge: how does a facade scaffold differ from a shoring tower? Which load classes and standards apply? Here we explain the most important scaffold types – soundly and clearly.
Overview
One family of scaffolds – a type for every task.
Scaffolding distinguishes strictly by purpose and standard. Working scaffolds carry people and materials, protective scaffolds arrest falls and objects, shoring scaffolds support structural parts during construction. Each type has its own rulebook. The pages below explain them in detail.
Facade scaffolds
System scaffolds to EN 12810/12811 – load classes 3 to 6.
Working & protective
Working scaffolds (LC 1–6) and catch/roof-edge scaffolds, protective fans.
Shoring scaffolds
Support structures to EN 12812 – classes A, B1, B2.
Suspended scaffolds
Hung working scaffolds of load classes 1–3.
Special scaffolds
Bespoke solutions beyond the standard configuration.
Engineered scaffolds
Structurally designed to the Eurocodes and EN 12812.
Scaffolding art
Scaffold as a stage for art, advertising and restoration.
Scaffolding apprenticeship
The trade of scaffolder – know-how as a public good.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which standards matter most in scaffolding?
The core standards are EN 12810 (prefabricated facade scaffolds), EN 12811 (working scaffolds, load classes), EN 12812 (shoring) and the DIN 4420 series (working and protective scaffolds). For safe use, the German TRBS 2121 also applies.
What is the difference between a working and a protective scaffold?
A working scaffold is a workplace and storage area for people and materials. A protective scaffold guards against falls (catch / roof-edge scaffold) or against falling objects (protective fan).
