Shoring scaffolds
Shoring & design classes.
Shoring scaffolds (falsework) support formwork and structural parts until they can carry themselves. Their safety hinges on the correct design class to EN 12812: A, B1 or B2.
Basics
What a shoring scaffold does.
A shoring scaffold (falsework / centering) carries the loads of formwork, fresh concrete or structural parts until the structure can support itself. EN 12812 governs requirements, design and detailing, dividing shoring into three design classes.
Design classes
Classes A, B1 and B2 to EN 12812.
| Class | Application | Analysis | Proof / method |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | simple structures (e.g. slabs/beams in housing) | span ≤ 6.0 m, height < 3.50 m, limited cross-sections | no shop drawings required; stability proof only if needed |
| B1 | all cases outside class A | full structural analysis | drawings (plan/section), load assumptions, subsoil – simplified design method |
| B2 | demanding shoring | full structural analysis | drawings + more rigorous design method than B1 |
Class A covers simple cases (limited spans and heights) and needs no shop drawings. As soon as a criterion is exceeded, B1 or B2 applies – with full structural analysis; the difference lies in the design method used.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
When is design class A sufficient?
For simple structures with a clear span up to 6.0 m, height below 3.50 m and limited cross-sections – then no shop drawings are required.
How do B1 and B2 differ?
Both require full structural analysis with drawings and load assumptions; they differ in the design method applied – B2 being the more rigorous.
