Facade scaffolds
Facade scaffolds & load classes.
The facade scaffold is the construction-site classic: a system scaffold of prefabricated components to EN 12810, whose capacity is defined by the load classes of EN 12811-1.
Basics
What defines a facade scaffold.
Facade scaffolds are length-oriented system scaffolds of prefabricated components, governed by EN 12810-1 (product specification) and designed to EN 12811-1 (working scaffolds). A standard designation such as EN 12810 – 4D – SW09/250 – H1 – B – LS encodes load class (4), system width (0.90–<1.20 m), bay length (2.50 m), clear height (H1), cladding (B) and ladder/stair access (LS).
Load classes
Load classes 3, 4, 5 and 6 – the capacity of a deck.
The load class determines the uniformly distributed area load a scaffold deck may carry per bay – the section between two standards.
| Load class | Area load | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.75 kN/m² | inspection, light work without storing materials |
| 2 | 1.5 kN/m² | trade work without storage (plaster, paint, pointing) |
| 3 | 2.0 kN/m² | storage of light building materials and equipment |
| 4 | 3.0 kN/m² | masonry/plastering with material storage |
| 5 | 4.5 kN/m² | heavy materials, stonework / solid construction |
| 6 | 6.0 kN/m² | very heavy loads, special cases |
Load class 3 (2.0 kN/m²) is the standard for light plastering and painting with some material storage. Class 4 (3.0 kN/m²) covers masonry and rendering. Class 5 (4.5 kN/m²) and class 6 (6.0 kN/m²) are for heavy materials, stonework and solid construction.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which load class does a facade scaffold need for plastering?
For plaster and paint work, load class 3 (2.0 kN/m²) is usually sufficient; with heavier material storage or masonry, class 4 (3.0 kN/m²) is chosen.
What does the system width SW09 mean?
SW09 denotes a system width of at least 0.90 m and less than 1.20 m – the usable deck width.
How do EN 12810 and EN 12811 differ?
EN 12810 specifies the facade system scaffold product (components, conformity); EN 12811 sets the general performance requirements for working scaffolds, including the load classes.
